CD Commentary by 2007 Latin Grammy-nominated Composer, Flavio Chamis:

"It is with great pleasure that I offer a commentary in celebration of “Orquestra de Samba’s” first CD release. As a Brazilian composer and musician, having followed the ensemble’s activities over the past years, I am captivated by its ability to perform such a wide range of genres to such a high degree of artistry. This is not an ensemble that merely covers Brazilian songs. “Orquestra de Samba” brings the refinement of classical performance, the spontaneity of jazz, and the communal joy of the Brazilian “Carnaval” into a program representing an unprecedented scope of musical styles. There is something for everyone to love about this group. The “Orquestra” is comprised of ten Chicago-area musicians with classical, jazz, afro-Cuban, and Brazilian backgrounds. This convergence of musical perspectives results in a unique and powerful sound with great depth of expression. Equally significant are “Orquestra de Samba’s” educational activities, which have brought thousands of children into direct contact with Brazilian music through in-school concerts, workshops, and community events. As a Brazilian, I am extremely happy to realize that the music of my country is recurrently bringing so many people, from so many different backgrounds, to an extraordinary celebration of art.

Hopefully the title of this CD “Brazilian Standards Vol. 1” implies that there is more to come. Maravilha!"
